The sidequest

It's the usual stopover for climbing one of the best-known 4,000 m peaks in the French Alps, on skis or as a mountaineering route. We did it in spring, with winter snow all the way up the glacier. We stayed at the refuge without going for the summit, but getting here is demanding enough: lots of elevation gain, avalanche-prone sections depending on conditions, and glacier terrain.

The route step by stepEvery stop with a direct Google Maps link so you don't get lost.
Getting there and where to sleepWhich valley you start from, how far the road goes with snow and the way to the glacier: it's all in the guide.
